Recent history has demonstrated the power of stories in the successes of the Civil Rights and Gay Rights movements. When individuals made their voices heard, they spoke from their hearts, disclosing who they were. These brave individuals educated the general public on inequality and injustice. They helped broaden public support to bring about change.
My Decision Project harnesses the power of authentically told stories, seeking to build bridges of understanding between disparate voices in the often-difficult conversations around abortion.
The power of shared abortion stories can also widen our understanding of abortion’s complicated issues, moving beyond over simplified discourse, pro or con, to the nuanced stories from individuals with the deepest connection to abortion.
The project also aims to build a "community" of those who have experienced abortion. By coming up close to others' stories, the viewer realizes she is not alone. The stigma, shame, and isolation that individuals might carry with them after their abortion could be mitigated.
